<p dir="auto">OpenAI has integrated Codex into the ChatGPT mobile app, allowing developers to monitor and manage their coding workflows remotely from iOS and Android devices. The update, currently in preview and available across all plans, goes beyond simple remote task monitoring — users can work across all their Codex threads, review outputs, approve commands, change models, and start new tasks from their phone regardless of where the live environment is running. "This is more than the ability to remotely control a single task or dispatch new tasks to your computer," OpenAI said in its announcement. The mobile integration follows a series of rapid Codex expansions: last month OpenAI gave the tool the ability to run autonomously in desktop background environments, and earlier this month introduced a Chrome extension allowing Codex to work within live browser sessions. The pace of releases signals that OpenAI is treating Codex as one of its most strategically important products rather than a peripheral developer tool.</p>
<p dir="auto">The mobile launch puts Codex in direct competition with Anthropic's Remote Control feature, released in February, which allows developers to monitor Claude Code's work from a mobile device. The parallel timing of these releases from both companies reflects an intensifying race to become the default agentic coding infrastructure for developers and businesses — a market that both OpenAI and Anthropic clearly view as one of the highest-value AI product categories currently available. Claude Code has gained significant popularity among businesses and technical professionals over the past year, and OpenAI's rapid feature cadence across desktop, browser, and now mobile suggests the company is responding to that competitive pressure with urgency. For freelance developers and independent software professionals specifically, having a coding agent that can run autonomously on a desktop while being monitored and approved from a phone removes one of the most significant friction points in delegating complex multi-step development tasks to AI — the need to be physically present at a workstation to review and approve each stage of execution.</p>
