Anthropic has surpassed OpenAI in verified business customer adoption for the first time, according to Ramp's monthly AI Index compiled from expense data across more than 50,000 companies. As of this month, 34.4% of participating businesses are paying for Anthropic services compared to 32.3% for OpenAI — a reversal that would have seemed unlikely twelve months ago when only 9% of businesses were paying for Anthropic products. That 26% climb over twelve months against OpenAI's 1% decline over the same period is the most striking data point in the report, and it reflects a deliberate strategy that Ramp economist Ara Kharazian described as working "really well": start with a highly technical customer base in finance, tech, and professional services, execute precisely for their specific needs, build credibility through that concentrated success, and then broaden out through tools like Claude Cowork. OpenRouter's leaderboard, which samples a different user population, shows OpenAI last ranked above Anthropic in December 2025 — a separate data point that suggests the Ramp findings reflect a genuine market shift rather than an artifact of one dataset.Kharazian is cautious about whether Anthropic can hold the top position, but the momentum of the past year provides real evidence that the company's technical-first, execution-focused approach has resonated with enterprise buyers in a way that pure brand recognition and first-mover advantage could not fully protect against.

Anthropic's Claude models have consistently performed well on the benchmarks that engineering and finance teams use to evaluate AI tools for production deployment, and the company's emphasis on safety and reliability has made it attractive to the compliance-sensitive sectors where OpenAI's more aggressive product velocity has sometimes created friction. The question now is whether the business customer lead can be extended and sustained as both companies compete for the next wave of AI adoption across a much larger and more diverse market.
