NEAR Protocol entered 2024 with genuine technical credibility — a sharded proof-of-stake blockchain with a developer-friendly architecture, meaningful institutional backing, and a clear narrative around AI and chain abstraction that positioned it as more than a generic Ethereum alternative. The problem is that technical credibility and a coherent narrative have proven insufficient to sustain price momentum and ecosystem growth in a market that has consolidated aggressively around a small number of dominant chains. Solana captured the retail and meme coin trading audience with speed and low fees. Ethereum retained institutional DeFi and tokenization activity through its network effects and regulatory legitimacy. Base absorbed a significant portion of the new developer activity that might otherwise have explored alternative Layer 1s. NEAR found itself in a middle position — technically superior to some competitors in specific dimensions but lacking the killer application or dominant use case that would give retail participants and institutional allocators a concrete reason to choose it over chains with larger existing ecosystems and deeper liquidity.

The AI narrative that NEAR leaned into heavily in 2024 and 2025 generated attention during peak AI hype cycles but did not translate into sustained on-chain activity that would give the token durable demand beyond speculation. When AI-themed crypto narratives faded as a primary market driver, NEAR lost one of its main differentiation stories without a replacement use case that commanded the same attention. The chain abstraction thesis — allowing users to interact with multiple blockchains without managing separate wallets and assets — is genuinely interesting but remains a developer and infrastructure story rather than a consumer-facing one, limiting its ability to drive retail adoption in the way that simple narratives like meme coins or yield farming have historically done for competing chains.
