Seven of the world's most significant Bitcoin mining pools have joined the Stratum V2 working group to collaboratively develop an open industry standard for the communication protocol that mining pool operators use to coordinate with individual miners. AntPool, Block Inc, F2Pool, Foundry, MARA Foundation, SpiderPool, and DMND are all now participating in the effort, representing a remarkable degree of cooperation among organizations that compete directly with each other for block rewards. The two largest pools by global hashrate are both involved: Foundry controls nearly 30% of global Bitcoin mining pool hashrate, and AntPool controls approximately 17.7%, meaning this working group collectively represents the majority of the network's mining power. The practical goal of Stratum V2 is to reduce the time it takes pools to communicate block templates to miners and receive work back, which directly affects profitability in an industry where milliseconds determine whether a miner wins a block or loses it to a competitor. "Bitcoin mining is competitive and fragmented by design. It is a race for efficiency where a millisecond can determine whether a miner wins a block or loses to a competitor," the Stratum V2 announcement said.

Beyond speed improvements, the open standard carries important structural implications for Bitcoin's decentralization. The Bitcoin mining industry has become increasingly centralized over recent years, with a small number of large pools controlling a disproportionate share of global hashrate — a trend that raises legitimate concerns about the network's resilience against coordinated attacks or regulatory pressure targeting specific operators. A shared open standard not controlled by any single mining pool operator gives individual miners greater flexibility in choosing block templates and reduces dependence on proprietary pool infrastructure. When miners can more easily switch between pools without compatibility friction, it limits the ability of any single pool to accumulate and maintain dominance purely through technical lock-in rather than genuine competitive merit.
