Tokenomics and a token economy are related concepts that are frequently conflated, but the distinction between them is one of the most important ideas in sustainable token design. Tokenomics describes the mechanical structure of a token: how many will exist, how supply is allocated across investors, teams, and the community, when locked tokens unlock, and how rewards enter circulation. These are necessary considerations, but they only describe how tokens move into the market — they say almost nothing about what happens after the token enters circulation and whether anyone actually needs it for anything.

A real token economy asks a fundamentally different set of questions. What activity inside the product creates demand for the token? Why do users, partners, or businesses need to acquire it? How does value flow through the ecosystem and return to the project over time? How does the token support product growth rather than working against it through constant sell pressure? The distinction is the difference between describing supply and describing economic behavior. A tokenomics model can be technically correct in every parameter and still produce a token that collapses, because the model never addressed whether the token was embedded in the product's economic logic or simply placed beside it as a separate tradeable asset. Building a real token economy means starting with the product, the business model, user behavior, and value flows — and only then designing the token mechanics that connect those elements into a self-reinforcing system.
