The regulatory and commercial expansion of crypto derivatives is proceeding simultaneously across US and European markets, creating a more comprehensive global infrastructure picture than at any previous point in the industry's history. In the US, Payward's completion of the Bitnomial acquisition gives Kraken a fully licensed CFTC derivatives stack covering exchange, clearing, and brokerage. CME is expanding its crypto futures catalog and moving toward 24/7 trading. Regulators are exploring frameworks for perpetual futures and working to reduce the offshore activity that has characterized US crypto derivatives trading for years. The direction of travel is clear even if the specific regulatory timeline remains uncertain.

In Europe, the expansion has been moving faster given the MiCA framework providing clearer licensing pathways. Kraken launched tokenized equity perpetual futures for non-US clients in February, offering 24/7 leveraged exposure to US stock indexes, gold, and equities. Coinbase expanded its derivatives offerings across 26 European countries through its MiFID-regulated entity in March with crypto and equity-index futures. One Trading, Gemini, and Backpack have all launched regulated perpetual contracts in Europe as well. The combined picture across both markets is of an industry building the regulated derivatives infrastructure that institutional participants require to allocate capital at scale, with US platforms racing to establish licensed positions before the regulatory opening that both industry participants and regulators appear to be actively working toward. For investors watching where institutional crypto capital flows over the next twelve to eighteen months, the buildout of regulated derivatives infrastructure on both sides of the Atlantic is one of the most consequential structural developments currently underway.
