YouTube is testing a new AI-powered interactive search feature called "Ask YouTube" that moves beyond returning a list of videos in response to a query and instead generates step-by-step results combining text, short clips, and longer videos in a single response. Users can ask questions like "plan a 3-day road trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara" and receive a structured breakdown that mixes written guidance with relevant video segments and full videos, each accompanied by titles and channel details to help users discover new creators in the process. Follow-up questions are also supported, allowing users to drill down into specifics like where to find good coffee along a route and receive contextually relevant suggestions in the same mixed-format style.

The feature is currently available to YouTube Premium subscribers in the US aged 18 and older through an opt-in experiment, with Google stating it is working toward making it available to non-Premium users as well. The launch is part of Google's broader push to bring AI mode-style search across multiple surfaces beyond its core Search product. The company has already introduced multi-part question handling, side-by-side web browsing, and product price exploration features to AI mode this year, along with Gemini's Canvas feature for maintaining projects within AI mode last month. For YouTube specifically, the Ask feature opens the door to a new kind of content discovery that could eventually incorporate sponsored placements alongside organic video results, making it both a user experience improvement and a potential new advertising surface for the platform.
