A separate report from freelance.ca highlights a more complex picture for independent workers in Canada, where rising hourly rates haven’t translated into higher financial satisfaction. While freelancers now average around $63/hour—a 31% increase over four years—only 25% report being satisfied with their financial situation.

The study points to growing instability in the freelance market, with fewer available projects and 24% of workers expecting conditions to worsen over the next five years. At the same time, dissatisfaction with political and structural support is rising, with 75% of freelancers saying they feel underserved by policymakers.

Despite these challenges, freelancers are rapidly adapting to new tools and workflows. Remote work has become dominant at 73%, while AI usage has surged past half of all freelancers, making artificial intelligence a baseline skill rather than a competitive advantage in today’s independent workforce.
