A new analysis from Sigma Tax Pro shows how dramatically location shapes a freelancer’s real income in the U.S., even for those earning six figures. The study evaluated major cities based on taxes, cost of living, and quality of life, revealing that a “$100K freelance income” can feel wildly different depending on where you live.

At the top of the list is Laredo, Texas, where low living costs (around $1,572 per month on average) allow freelancers to retain significantly more disposable income after taxes and essentials. Close behind is Lubbock, Texas, praised for its affordability, slower pace of life, and lifestyle balance that favors independent workers.

Other Texas cities also dominate the rankings, including Plano, Texas and El Paso, Texas, both offering strong financial efficiency thanks to low taxes and reduced housing costs. The only non-Texas city in the top tier is Port St. Lucie, Florida, where the absence of state income tax gives freelancers another route to maximizing earnings.
