The American Bankers Association is making a strategic move that could slow down the rollout of stablecoin regulation in the US. In a formal request to agencies including the US Treasury Department and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the group is asking for an additional 60 days to review and comment on rules tied to the GENIUS Act.

At the core of the request is timing. The ABA argues that regulators are moving too quickly without aligning their frameworks — especially since key guidance from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency is still pending. Without that final rule, banks say they’re essentially being asked to comment “in the dark,” which could lead to inconsistent or flawed regulation down the line.
