A new proposal from Avihu Levy introduces a method called Quantum Safe Bitcoin (QSB), which could protect Bitcoin from quantum attacks without requiring a network upgrade. Unlike traditional approaches that rely on protocol changes, QSB works within Bitcoin’s existing system by replacing standard cryptographic signatures with a hash-based puzzle mechanism.

The idea is simple but powerful: instead of using elliptic curve cryptography—which quantum computers could break—the sender must brute-force a hash that mimics a valid signature. This approach makes transactions resistant to quantum attacks, even those using advanced algorithms like Shor’s. However, while technically feasible today, the method is designed more as a stopgap solution rather than a long-term fix.
