The European Parliament has reportedly disabled built-in AI tools on lawmakers’ work devices, citing cybersecurity and privacy concerns. According to an internal email obtained by Politico, the parliament’s IT department said it could not guarantee the safety of confidential correspondence uploaded to external AI servers and is still assessing the full scope of data potentially shared with AI providers.

The restriction affects AI chatbots such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Copilot, and Anthropic’s Claude. Officials warned that uploading sensitive information to US-based platforms could expose data to legal demands from American authorities. The move comes amid broader tensions between the EU and US tech giants, as well as ongoing debates over Europe’s data protection standards and the reach of US government subpoenas targeting major firms like Google and Meta.
