Bhutan’s blockchain-based national ID illustrates how decentralized identity can work in practice. Citizens hold their credentials directly, using cryptographic proofs to verify necessary information without exposing full personal data. Systems leveraging Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) and Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) allow users to prove facts — like age or work eligibility — without giving up sensitive details. Zero-knowledge proofs further enhance privacy by enabling verifications that reveal only a simple “yes” or “no,” keeping the underlying data private while maintaining trust.

The contrast with centralized models is stark. Programs like India’s Aadhaar demonstrate the benefits of scale, reducing fraud and streamlining access to services, but also reveal vulnerabilities: breaches have exposed personal data of over a billion citizens, and dependence on the system can create forms of digital coercion. As digital identity becomes inevitable, countries face a critical choice: adopt centralized systems with efficiency and risk of misuse, or embrace decentralized designs that embed privacy, resilience, and individual control into the very architecture of identity.
