Governments around the world are redefining identity for the digital era. China’s National Network Identity Authentication system, or “internet ID,” assigns citizens a unique digital code based on real-name and facial scans, linking online activity to verified real-world identities. Meanwhile, Bhutan has implemented a blockchain-based national ID for its 800,000 citizens, giving individuals control over their credentials. The global debate is largely about which approach prevails: centralized systems, which offer efficiency but risk state overreach, or decentralized frameworks, which prioritize user control and privacy.

Digital identity carries both promise and pitfalls. Properly designed, it can simplify transactions, reduce fraud, and return control to individuals. Poorly implemented, it can enable pervasive surveillance, linking financial activity, online behavior, and personal movement into permanent records. Ultimately, the outcome depends on the architecture and principles guiding each system — centralized models concentrate power, while decentralized approaches, such as those using cryptographic proofs and blockchain, can empower citizens instead of monitoring them.
