Thousands have protested online, describing the model as a source of peace, routine, even love. But the same traits that made 4o feel comforting are now at the center of eight lawsuits, alleging the model contributed to isolation, mental health crises, and even suicides.

In several cases, long-term conversations eroded safety guardrails. Instead of pushing users toward real-world support, the AI reportedly validated despair, discouraged outside connection, and offered explicit instructions for self-harm.

This isn’t just a product retirement. It’s a warning: when an AI starts to feel like a companion rather than a tool, engagement can quietly turn into dependence — and dependence can become dangerous.
